A Letter From Management

Posted in Lifestyle on 05/05/2012 by Baghead Kelly

My workload has shifted into overdrive and so for the foreseeable future I won’t have the time to spend on my blog. I have enjoyed my initiation into all things blogging and I have also enjoyed a great number of other peoples blogs, probably yours. So if I have regularly defaced your blog page then don’t feel as if I am ignoring you its just that I must make hay while the sun shines.

Home Recording Reno

My little music room is only 8ft x 9ft. With space at a premium I had to be careful because over the years I had collected a ridiculous amount of  music paraphernalia. The idea of this little project was to store my music collection but also give me room underneath so that I could store and access my amps and speakers etc. The bench was supposed to provide an area where I could work on my guitars but in reality it is always covered in crud and I do that work on the dining room table. I have some large music books that have never fit into standard bookshelves and so the lowest shelf is built to accommodate those. Then there are 6 shelves for my CD’s which are also slightly higher than standard to accommodate special editions and so forth. I left the centre shelving out to provide for my little Jimi shrine (the walrus was Paul) and the top shelf is for music DVD’s. The roof of the shelving is wider than the rest and I use it for box sets and smaller books. All up that is a bucket load of weight supported by two metal frames I welded up underneath and some 3 1/2″ x 2″  stud work. I really enjoyed this project and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I incorporated two minor details that improved the design. The rounded corner on the bench I reciprocated on the upper and lower shelves which gave a slight art deco feel to the piece. Secondly I airbrushed the edges of the bench slightly darker to reflect my sunburst guitars which hang next to it – it doesn’t look much in the photo but in real life it turned out very effective.

The Look (original poem)

Posted in Poetry with tags , , on 04/17/2012 by Baghead Kelly

With insincere sincerity
The best that could be mustered
I heard the words and caught the look
that caused me to be flustered

“would you like a canapé Sir?

Well upon a time I could see
that she was once a flower
head held high in dignity
for a mere ten bucks an hour.

but caste my way and said that day
A servant to their master
Know not they to whom they serve
In this class system disaster

For who be I that lives this lie
and garners such respect
A fraud I’m sure, unpleasantly
reminded to reflect

My favourite find on Soundcloud at the moment is Superfly Party. Based in Barcelona they have free downloads of their Thursday night jams and if you like soul then they’re serving it hot.

I Love The Sixties; The Easybeats

Posted in Music, Sixties, Songwriting with tags , , on 04/16/2012 by Baghead Kelly

The Easybeats are best known for “Friday On My Mind” but they had a string of hits in Australia. The band consisted of two Dutchmen, two Poms and a Scot and although they weren’t born in Australia they were dinky di. They met at the Villawood Migrant Hostel in Sydney and cut their chops on the rough side of town. Fronted by the cocky Stevie Wright the band quickly made a name for themselves. Originally Stevie co-wrote the tunes with the Scotsman; George Young. (George’s older brother Alex played for 60’s psychedelic outfit ‘Grapefruit’ whilst his younger brother’s Malcolm and Angus were the backbone of AC/DC) Later George wrote songs with Harry Vanda. George and Harry later became known as ‘Flash In The Pan’ and were immortalised in the song ‘Sultans of Swing’; check out Guitar George he knows all the chords…….. And Harry doesn’t mind if he doesn’t make the scene.

Luckily today we can check out the boys doing their thing on Youtube. “Friday On My Mind”, “Sorry”, “She’s So Fine”, “Good Times” are all there plus some Flash In The Pan material too. Vanda and Young also wrote a lot of material for John Paul Young so check out some of his tunes if you like the Easybeat style.

Baghead Writes A Poem

Posted in Art, Poetry with tags , , on 04/10/2012 by Baghead Kelly

I’m afraid the language is overly Australian but I’m just trying different things. I hope you like it.

“The Garbage Man”

Collector of plastic collector of cans

who might it be but the old garbage man.

At sunrise he toiled and worked hard for his quid

he drove the truck and behind tagged the kid.

The kid was a star down the old footy club

the old man his trainer, mentor and bud.

Together they worked and together they earned

though not related it was together they learned.

There ages were different and so were their fates

it made not a difference cause they were best mates.

But one day through the valley in rode the court jester,

a boil in the district full of puss, yet to fester.

He spoke the vernacular of silver forked tongue,

he stood on his soap box each day in the sun.

Where was he from……well it wasn’t from here,

but he had a vision,  although it wasn’t quite clear.

“Revitalized, modernized, everything new,

strategically, developed – for just me and you.

Sustainable living amongst urban sprawl,

economic growth well it benefits you all”.

The people they listened and bugger me dead,

the people were mesmerised with each word that he said.

But I thought to myself, this is garbage, Man!,

I heard all the words but I didn’t understand.

Well one day in the yard the boys they were told

that their services weren’t needed, that their methods were old.

A contract was written, without their consent,

drafted by lawyers and set in cement.

Everyone was sad – to see the boys leave the show,

fellas could you clean out your lockers fore you go.

The new bloke’s alright – he does the work of two,

with shiny hydraulics in his truck spankin’new.

His shirt is flurescent and he’s usually not late,

don’t know his name yet he’s from interstate.

Sometimes at Christmas when I’d put out a beer,

I think of those garbo’s who were mates yesteryear.

The young kid he shot through, looking for work,

forgot about footy and now he’s a clerk.

As for the old boy from what I understand,

he travels the roadways looking for cans.

As time it rolls on its abundantly clear,

we all have a due date and yours is it near?
